Course Description

The Nurse Aide Course provides students with a comprehensive foundation in theory, practical skills, and professional communication necessary for success in the role of a Nurse Aide. Through a blend of classroom instruction and hands-on experience, students will develop the knowledge and proficiency required to deliver compassionate and competent care to patients and residents in various healthcare settings.

Students will engage in classroom lectures, discussions, and interactive learning activities to explore topics such as anatomy and physiology, infection control, medical terminology, patient safety, and ethical considerations in healthcare. Under the guidance of experienced healthcare professionals, students will perform Nurse Aide duties and gain hands-on experience in providing patient-centered care.

Students will participate in skill labs and simulate patient care scenarios to practice and refine essential skills, including measuring vital signs accurately, assisting with ADLs, and performing safe patient transfers. Skills will be assessed through practical demonstrations and competency evaluations.

Emphasis will be placed on developing effective communication skills, including active listening, clear verbal and nonverbal communication, and empathy. Students will learn to communicate professionally with patients, residents, families, and interdisciplinary healthcare team members to promote collaboration and patient/resident safety.

The course encompasses the American Heart Association’s Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider and Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED certification course, both valid for a duration of two years.

At the end of the Nurse Aide Course, students will receive a Pass/Fail grade. Final grade is contingent upon successful completion of all coursework and competency assessments.

Certification

After successfully completing the Nurse Aide Course, students will qualify to take the Prometric Hawaii Nurse Aide certification exam, leading to the acquisition of the Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) credential designation.
